Looking for something fun to do in Exeter without spending much? The city is full of places, activities and hidden corners that offer a great day out for little or no cost. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a quiet solo wander or a meet-up with friends, here are some of the best budget-friendly ideas to enjoy around Exeter.

Explore Exeter’s Free Museums

Exeter’s museums offer hours of interest at no cost. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) is an easy favourite, with galleries covering natural history, world cultures and the story of Exeter itself. Entry is free, and there are often family-friendly activities and exhibitions throughout the year.

Just across the city, Exeter Cathedral’s Green hosts the Exeter Guildhall—another free spot to pop into. One of the oldest working municipal buildings in England, it’s small but fascinating, and right in the heart of the high street.

Wander the Historic Quayside

Exeter Quay is one of the city’s most picturesque areas, and completely free to explore. Walk or cycle the riverside paths, spot local wildlife, or browse the independent shops housed in the old warehouses. If you’re visiting at the weekend, the Quay often has craft stalls and small events that add to the atmosphere.

Enjoy Exeter’s Green Spaces

The city’s parks are perfect for a low-cost afternoon out. Northernhay Gardens and Rougemont Gardens offer peaceful lawns beside the city walls, while Heavitree Pleasure Ground is ideal for families, with play areas, wide open space and free tennis courts.

For a longer walk, head to the Exe Valley Trail or take a short trip to Ludwell Valley Park, a much-loved countryside escape inside the city boundary.

Discover St Nicholas Priory

One of Exeter’s oldest buildings, St Nicholas Priory in the West Quarter offers free or low-cost entry depending on the day. Visitors can explore the atmospheric Tudor rooms and learn about the city’s medieval history. Keep an eye on their programme, as they also host workshops and community days.

Take a Self-Guided City Trail

Exeter is full of stories, and a self-guided walk is a great way to uncover them. Follow trails like:

  • The City Wall Walk
  • The Medieval Exeter Trail
  • The Cathedral Close and Bishop’s Palace Walk

Maps are available online or from tourist information points, and all are free to follow at your own pace.
