A Christmas message to North Devon from Ian Roome MP

As we head into Christmas, I want to begin with a simple message: Merry Christmas, North Devon!

 It’s been a full-on year, and I’m genuinely grateful for the kindness and support shown across our communities, it really is second to none!

But, before anything else, I want to say thank you to the people who will be working through the festive period; in our NHS, care services, emergency services and local businesses.

Because, as we all know, Christmas can be a difficult time of the year for many. 

The cost of living doesn’t pause for Christmas, energy bills still land, rent and mortgages still need paying, and lots can find this time of the year more lonely than ever.

If that’s you this year, you are not alone - there is support here in North Devon. 

And if you’re in a position to help, even in a small way, there is so much we can do that really makes a difference.

I recently visited Barnstaple Tesco to see their Winter Food Collection, run in partnership with Trussell, and to thank both the staff and the volunteers who make it happen.

Adding an extra item or two to your trolley for a food collection is a simple and practical way to help, because the reality is that foodbanks and local support services see demand rise in winter, and these collections help keep shelves stocked with the essentials people need.

Christmas is also about company and community, and it was lovely to join the festive Memory Café at Barnstaple Library. 

It brought together older residents and people living with memory loss or dementia for a bit of warmth, a chat, some mince pies and that comforting sense of “normal”.

That same community spirit was everywhere at the Christmas Tree Festival at South Molton Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene; a proper North Devon tradition. 

It was joyful, welcoming, and a brilliant showcase of local groups coming together.

It’s also a good moment to recognise the organisations quietly doing the hard work day in, day out for people who are struggling, like Northern Devon Foodbank, North Devon Hospice, and North Devon Against Domestic Abuse to name but a few.

Citizens Advice is there too if you’re feeling overwhelmed by money worries, debt, benefits, or housing and energy issues. Support comes in lots of forms, and there’s absolutely no shame in reaching out.

Thank you again to everyone giving their time over the festive period. North Devon does Christmas brilliantly, so wherever you’re spending it, I’m wishing you a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!
