Devon charity Westbank Community Health and Care has launched three Christmas campaigns to support people across Exeter and the wider county who may be experiencing loneliness, financial strain or emotional difficulties during the festive period.

Throughout December, the charity is encouraging residents to donate or take part in simple, practical activities that help local people who may be struggling.

Volunteers have also decorated a Christmas tree in Princesshay as part of the annual Charity Christmas Tree Festival, raising awareness of the support Westbank provides year-round.

This Christmas, the charity is inviting people to get involved in three ways.

The “Give a Gift” appeal allows residents to donate £5, £10, £20 or an amount of their choice, with all funds helping Westbank to run its self-funded community services.

People can also choose to “Donate in lieu of a Card”, offering a contribution on behalf of a friend or family member instead of giving a traditional Christmas card or gift.

Westbank has also launched a Reverse Advent Calendar, encouraging supporters to add one food item a day to a box, following a downloadable guide from the charity’s website.

The donations will help stock Westbank’s Community Larders and fill Christmas hampers for families and individuals facing hardship.

Anyone can join the initiative at any point during December.

Local residents in Exeter have welcomed the initiative. Sarah Jenkins from St Thomas said she plans to take part in the Reverse Advent Calendar with her children, adding that it’s “a simple way to teach them about helping others at Christmas”.

Meanwhile, Fore Street resident David Rowe said he supports the Donate in Lieu of a Card campaign because “every pound makes a difference to someone nearby who needs a bit of extra support.”

The charity says these campaigns offer a meaningful way for residents to support others in their community during what can be a difficult time of year.

Westbank is encouraging anyone able to contribute to explore the different ways of getting involved. More information is available on their website.
