A new skincare brand rooted in traditional ingredients and handmade craftsmanship has launched in Devon. Howton Tallow, founded by Newton Abbot tradesman Ian Prince, aims to offer what he describes as a “simpler, more honest approach to skin care” at a time when demand for natural and transparent beauty products is rising.
Ian developed the range after struggling to find skincare that could cope with the demands of his trade. “I wanted something simple, natural and effective,” he said. “Most skincare products I tried were full of chemicals or made promises they didn’t deliver on. So, I started experimenting with tallow, an ingredient people have used for centuries and I was amazed at the results. That’s when Howton Tallow began.”
The brand’s balms are handmade in Devon by Ian and his small family-run team, using just a handful of natural ingredients including tallow and essential oils. All products are free from parabens, artificial fragrances and unnecessary additives, and are suitable for use on the face and body.
Tallow, a nutrient-rich fat derived from grass-fed beef, has been used for skincare for thousands of years. Its fatty acid structure closely resembles that of human skin, making it highly absorbable and gentle on a wide range of skin types. Historically, rendered animal fats were used from ancient Egyptian and Roman societies to rural European households to soothe weather-worn skin, a tradition that has gained renewed relevance as consumers look for effective natural alternatives.
Interest in clean beauty continues to grow in the UK. The Soil Association values the certified organic and natural beauty market at over £150 million, while Mintel reports that 40% of natural skincare buyers choose these products because they believe them to be gentler on the skin.
“We’re really proud to be building this here in Devon,” Ian said. “It’s always been a place that values nature, simplicity and sustainability and that’s exactly what Howton Tallow stands for.”
Ian plans to expand the brand’s presence across South Devon in the coming months, with hopes of stocking products in local farm shops and markets alongside online sales.
