The South West’s largest combined environmental and recreational charity has launched a recruitment drive for new volunteer trustees, inviting people from all backgrounds to help guide the future of some of the region’s most valued natural landscapes.
South West Lakes Trust, which manages 50 lakes and recreation sites across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, is calling for applicants who are passionate about protecting the natural environment, supporting local communities, and promoting outdoor wellbeing. The charity’s sites attract millions of visitors each year for walking, water sports, angling, education programmes and nature conservation.
Trustees play a central role in overseeing the organisation’s governance, financial sustainability and long-term strategy.
John Lee OBE DL, Chair of the charity’s Board of Trustees, said: “Our charity cares for 50 sites across the South West, welcoming millions of visitors and protecting landscapes and wildlife for future generations.
As a trustee, you’ll help shape our vision, influence decisions, and ensure these special places continue to thrive. If you’re passionate about nature, community and making a lasting impact, step forward – your insight and leadership can make the difference.”
Founded in 2000 during the regional restructuring of water authorities, South West Lakes Trust was the first charity of its kind in the UK, created to manage reservoirs and surrounding land for both conservation and public recreation. Its headquarters are based at Roadford Lake, on the Devon–Cornwall border.
The charity is encouraging applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. Previous board experience is not required, with full training and support offered. Trustees typically attend four to six half-day meetings each year, either in person or online, and join occasional events or project visits. Appointments are made for an initial three-year term.
Chief Executive James Platts said: “As a trustee, you’ll be part of something truly special. You’ll help protect wildlife, inspire communities, and shape the future of our landscapes. Whether your background is in business, conservation, education, or community work, your voice and experience can make a real difference.”
Those interested are invited to submit a CV and short expression of interest to jplatts@swlakestrust.org.uk.
