I was shocked and saddened to hear about the devastating fire that took place at Honestone Street in Bideford.

It has been a shocking and far-reaching incident which has touched many members of the community.

I am sure that I can speak for all elected members in paying tribute not only to the emergency services but to council officers for how they responded with such professionalism and compassion, the community which has rallied around and all those who continue to support residents through this difficult time.

Coming together as a community during difficult times is part of what makes us human. Earlier this week, I stood proudly alongside my fellow councillors and officers at Torridge District Council, to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of the armed forces and to join in the hope for a brighter, more peaceful future.

As a community, it’s important that we remember not only those who have fallen but also those who still serve and their families. With everything going on in the world today, I firmly believe that it has never been more important that we create space to reflect on past conflicts and acknowledge their cost to humanity.

Looking to the future and investing in our young people must always be a priority. Last week, officers from Torridge District Council were delighted to attend the annual Bideford College Careers Fair.

Students had the opportunity to find out about the wide range of job roles, from front-line services to behind-the-scenes support and get expert advice on the application process and interview preparation for work experience.

As a council we are eager to help any young person who is passionate about enhancing community wellbeing or public service, to find out the exciting prospects on offer at TDC and how they can start a rewarding and meaningful career with us.

Providing opportunities for our young people is crucial not only for their personal development, but is essential for the health, progress and sustainability of society as a whole.

Thanks to funding from the Shared Prosperity fund from the government, we are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for anyone aged 16 to 22 who is interested in art and cares about their local community to work with award-winning national artists, to create new public artwork and wayfinding interventions for Bideford.

Participants will have the chance to learn and explore playful creative techniques to support collaboration and experimentation as well as learn creative methods to generate and share new ideas and strengthen communication skills.
