The A38 in Devon has been closed eastbound after a bridge joint defect was found, leading to significant delays for drivers.

National Highways said the closure is in place between the B3380 at Dean and the A384 at Buckfastleigh. Crews were deployed today (Tuesday 11 November) to install a lane one closure, which will remain in place until this evening.

According to National Highways, temporary repairs to the damaged bridge joint will be carried out overnight under a full road closure.

Drivers are being asked to follow the signed diversion route. The diversion takes motorists off the A38 at Lower Dean, onto the B3380 through Buckfastleigh, across the River Dart, and back onto the A38 eastbound at Dart Bridge.

National Highways has advised anyone travelling through the area to allow extra time, plan ahead or consider delaying their journey.

A spokesperson said further updates will be available on the Traffic England website, travel apps, and via the organisation’s regional social media feeds. Live information is also available from the National Highways 24/7 contact centre on 0300 123 5000.
