Fishing Flounder in the teeth of Storm Bert

Tough week on the water for South Devon anglers

The ASG Flounder Championship fished in the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary waw fished in atrocious conditions this year as Storm Bert unleashed its might on the 76 senior and six junior anglers.

Top angler was Al Hobbs with a Flounder of 3lbs 2oz, which won him two rods and reels, plus a total of £1650 cash, with top junior being Jack Lavis who won two rods, reels and a load of tackle. Money was also raised for the RNLI. A big thanks, as always, to the sponsors of this great event.

The next Flounder competition is the Mike Johnson Three Rivers fished on December 29. This is sponsored by Brixham Bait and Tackle, where you can get more details or you can contact Mike on 07702 282284. A reminder also of the Angling Trust Wyvern shore championships at Slapton Sands on Sunday, January 5 with sign-on at Streete Gate from 11am.

Making the most of conditions as the sea settled after the storm, Luke Rossiter headed for Slapton Sands hoping that the stormy seas had stirred up enough food to get the fish feeding close to the shore.

He was not disappointed when his baits were taken by some tremendous Spurdogs. His total was three double figure fish weighing up to a fantastic 15lbs 5oz and a bonus Bull Huss of 8lbs 8oz.

Also getting amongst the Spurdogs after many years of trying was Teignmouth SAC member Bobby Drew with a fish of 13lbs. Teignmouth’s recent competition was blown out with only one fish of note being weighed and that was a Smal Eyed Ray of 10lbs 11oz to the rod of Adam Slack.

Freshwater anglers have been braving the conditions with Newton Abbot Fishing Association fishing their Club Members Wednesday Rover Sweepstake on Bradley Pond, with Duncan Arnold taking the honours with a weight of 4lbs 10oz, Nigel Jeffrey was second with 3lbs 10oz and Dave Sugden third with 3lbs 9oz. Season tickets for 2025 can now be purchased via their website.

The Fish of the month Competition for November kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre is really hotting up with some fantastic fish coming in. Just when I think we have a winner, someone else catches as fantastic fish. We will announce the winners next week. Please email your entries for December to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com or you can contact me via Messenger.
