Exam students across Torbay and South Devon have been celebrating outstanding A-level results
South Devon College pupils delivered a 97 per cent overall pass rate. This year sees the continuation of the college’s history of high pass rates with 65 per cent A*- C and almost 40 per cent of the cohort achieving an excellent A* to B result.
The college is celebrating 100 per cent achievement rates across a broad mix of subjects including English literature and language, Business, Chemistry, Physics, Law, Sociology, Politics and Criminology.
It is also celebrating high results across a broad range of technical and professional qualifications including its first cohort of T Level students with a 95 per cent pass rate and 40 per cent achieving distinctions.
Abbey Oliphant, 18, from Dartmouth studied A level geography, politics, biology and the Extended Project EPQ (A,A,B,D). Abbey has a place at Exeter University.
Paris Matthews, from Torquay, has secured her place at Brighton University to study film. The 18-year-old studied A level film studies, psychology and sociology (B B A).
Fergus McGrath, from Preston, studied sociology, criminology and film studies (A B B). Fergus is hoping to go on to university to study criminology and sociology.
Daniel Jamieson, 18, studied maths, chemistry and biology (B A C) and is now progressing towards a master’s degree in geography at Exeter.
Josh Harrison, 18 and from Torquay, took photography, film studies and mathematical studies. (BBB).Josh is going on to a software engineering apprenticeship.
Jodie Heather, 18 and from Brixham, who studied biology, chemistry and psychology, (CBA) plans to go to university to study veterinary science or any biology related science.
Timothy Simmons, also 18, studied maths, computer science, religious studies and politics. (ABBC) and has now secured a place to study a computer science degree at Exeter.
Olivia Moth, 19, studied an Education and Early Years T Level and achieved a distinction. Olivia now has a full time job as a teaching assistant at the school where she had a placement.
Olivia, from Torquay, didn’t finish her secondary education due to having ME and was bedridden from the age of 14 for two years. She said: “My energy levels were completely down and I couldn’t do anything. I started at South Devon College doing a Level 2 before starting the T Level course. Every tutor was so supportive.”
Ethan Appleby, 19, studied T Level Education and Childcare. He has a place at University Centre South Devon to study a psychology and criminology degree.
George Goddard, 18, from Brixham, achieved a Distinction* in his Childcare and Education T Level.
* Torquay Girls' Grammar School has seen an increase from the 2019 results, with almost 60 per cent of A-level students achieving three or more A*- B grades.
Madison Cooper-Thompson achieved three A* grades and is going to study International Business and Modern Languages at Exeter. Lottie Bowden achieved all A*s and will go on to study Medical Sciences at Exeter.
Alice Thompson achieved all A*s and will study Chemistry at Manchester.. Chloe Powell achieved all A*s and will study Zoology at Manchester.
Sian King achieved 2 A*s and 1 A grade, taught herself Korean and will be going to study Korean and Japanese Studies at Sheffield. Ashleigh Hughes achieved all A grades and is off to study Medicine at Exeter.
Lucy Webber is also off to read Medicine at Newcastle. During the exams she was also competing in the National Rowing championships.
Estelle Roots, the holder of some of the fastest Under 20 100m times in the country, achieved 1 A* and 2 As and will be studying Medicine at Cardiff.
Maya Gyosheva is using her three A*/As to study Engineering at Warwick, whilst Lydia Hancock is using her three A*/As to study Theoretical Physics at Royal Holloway. Maisie Wilson achieved four grade As and has secured a degree apprenticeship with DEFRA.
Violet McArdle beat thousands of others to secure a Project Management degree apprenticeship.
Lisa Hoerning, who gained three A* and an A is off to study Politics and Geography. She gained an A* in her EPQ which focuses on designing a skate park as well as finding the time to lead campaigns on Climate Change.
Jumanah Awad worked with younger students at TGGS and Torquay Boys’ Grammar School and achieved two A* and one A grade to study Journalism at Cardiff University.
Isabelle Spurle achieved two As and a B and has been selected for the Police Degree Apprenticeship scheme.
