The event, organised by Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay, aims to bring people together to enjoy cycling while raising awareness about the need for safer travel at night, with a mix of colourful lights, music and community spirit.

Torbay’s Glow Ride returns on Friday, October 30, to champion safer travel after dark.

The event has been organised by Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay (SSTT) and is a part of Cycling UK’s national My Ride. Our right campaign.

The campaign highlights the barriers that prevent people, especially women, from cycling and calls for safer and more inclusive streets.

This includes addressing concerns about road safety, intimidating behaviour and inadequate infrastructure.

Beth Huntley, founder and chair of Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay, said: “Last year we had an amazing time, even though the weather really wasn’t on our side!”

“This year we’re back, bigger than ever, and we can’t wait to bring people together again.”

“The Glow Ride is about having fun, celebrating cycling and showing that everyone deserves to feel safe travelling after dark.”

This year, the Deputy Mayor will be attending to represent the Civic Mayor of Torbay, Councillor Hazel Foster.

The event will begin at The Boathouse in Preston, Paignton, where Sound Communities will bring its Boom Bus, a mobile music and broadcast facility, to create a festival of sound and light.

Hot drinks, food and other refreshments will be available from The Boathouse before riders set off at 6:30pm.

The ride will finish at TQ Beerworks in Torquay, opposite Torre Abbey Sands.

Participants who register in advance will receive a free set of twinkly lights to illuminate their bike.

Everyone is encouraged to dress brightly and get creative, making their bikes shine.

There will be spot prizes for the best decorations on the night.

Adding to the atmosphere, Ocean Youth Radio will broadcast the event live, sharing the excitement with listeners

Participants are also encouraged to bring their own speakers and tune in to the live broadcast, helping create a shared soundtrack that brings the ride to life and draws attention to the event.

Beth Huntley emphasised that the Glow Ride is open to everyone.

She said: “You don’t need to be an experienced rider or own a fancy bike; just come along, glow up and show up for safer travel.”

Those travelling to Torbay without a bike can contact SSTT to enquire about borrowing a bike or e-bike.

With its mix of colourful lights, music and community spirit, the Glow Ride aims to bring people together to enjoy cycling while raising awareness about the need for safer travel at night.
