Hotel staff out to cycle 1,000 miles in a month - and you can join in

Hotel Indigo Torquay is getting on its bike for charity.

The new seafront hotel has started a month-long charity cycle event with the aim of covering 1,000 miles on spin bikes in the hotel reception to raise money for Rowcroft Hospice.

Reaching 1,000 miles means covering around 33 miles every day, and the hotel is inviting colleagues, guests and members of the public to take a turn on the bikes and add their miles to the total.

Donations can be made in reception through the collection buckets or by card, so anyone passing by can give whether or not they cycle.

The challenge marks Giving for Good month, IHG Hotels and Resorts' annual celebration of how colleagues around the world come together to make a positive impact in their communities and bring the company's purpose of True Hospitality for Good to life.

Last year thousands of IHG colleagues supported causes close to their hearts through volunteering, fundraising and donations, helping to improve almost half a million lives. IHG now has more than 400,000 colleagues across its global family.

Rowcroft Hospice provides care for people across South Devon living with life limiting illness, and for the people close to them.

Tirion Canavan, General Manager at Hotel Indigo Torquay, said: "Rowcroft looks after families right across our community, and most of us here know someone the hospice has helped.

“In aid of the wonderful work the Hospice continues to do for the community, we have placed the bikes in reception so not only our team can participate by cycling miles and raising funds for such an important cause, but our guests and anyone who walks through the door can all be part of the same 1,000 miles.

“Every mile and every penny counts and we want as many people as possible across the community to join us and get involved."

Rowcroft Partnerships Development Manager Hayley Townsend said: "We are very grateful to Tirion and the team at Hotel Indigo Torquay for choosing to support Rowcroft with this incredible challenge.

“Rowcroft is here for families across South Devon, and that care is only possible because local businesses and local people choose to support us. A thousand miles in a hotel reception is a lovely way to get the whole community involved, and we would encourage anyone in Torbay to call in during September, have a go on the bikes and give what they can."

The hotel is sharing progress through September on its social media channels, and the total raised will be confirmed at the end of the month.
