Hottest summer in decades recorded across the Bay

Torbay has experienced its warmest summer on record, eclipsing the famous heat of 1976 and 1995.

Despite some unsettled conditions to end August, this summer has been confirmed locally as the hottest in living memory. While previous years brought longer droughts and more sunshine, 2025 has topped the charts for overall warmth.

Last week reflected the season’s changeable nature. The warmest day came on 25 August, when temperatures reached 25°C, while the coolest night fell on 28 August at 11.9°C.

Rainfall totalled 72.8mm, with 39.1mm falling on 28 August alone – the wettest day in the Bay since 15 April and the third wettest of the year so far. A thunderstorm on 29 August caused localised flooding in Paignton.

There were 49.3 hours of sunshine recorded during the week, with Bank Holiday Monday the brightest day at 11.7 hours. Winds reached 33mph on 30 August and 31mph on 31 August.

While August ended stormily, the overall season will be remembered for record-breaking warmth – one that has secured its place in Torbay’s weather history.
