Community Matters: Sunshine, smiles, and summer fun

Toddlers on tractors at Dart Park

On a bright and blazing summer day, Shiphay Park, also known as Dart Park, was transformed into a vibrant hub of laughter, colour and community spirit as families gathered for a free event designed especially for children.

With the sun high in the sky and temperatures soaring, the park buzzed with activity, offering a welcome celebration of summer togetherness.

The event was organised by Play Torbay, with a very big thank you to Tanny and Anna, and funded by Shiphay and Upper Chelston Community Partnership. The event drew in over 200  excited children and their families.  From the moment they arrived, the little ones were met with an array of engaging activities, each one more exciting than the last.

A highlight of the day was the shiny green tractor. SWISCO has three tractors in use, and it was parked on the grass – a magnet for curious youngsters.  Children eagerly clambered aboard, posing for photos and pretending to steer across imaginary fields.  Their delight was obvious as they chatted animatedly with staff from SWISCO, who patiently answered questions and explained how tractors helped them with their work around the Bay.

The scavenger hunt proved to be an exciting adventure, with children dashing around the park searching for clues hidden under benches and behind trees. Squeals of excitement erupted each time a clue was found.

No summer celebration would be complete without some sweet treats, and the cake stall did not disappoint.  Tables were piled high with fabulous homemade cakes, lovingly baked and supplied by Mia’s Home Bakes. Generous portions and smiling faces made the treats all the sweeter.

What made the day truly special, however, was the strong sense of community.  Families picnicked on blankets, neighbours chatted over sandwiches and tea, and volunteers and organisers ensured everything ran smoothly.  There was laughter, conversation, and a shared sense of joy in seeing the park so full of life.

As the sun began to dip in the sky, there was a reluctant trickle of families heading home, sticky fingers and sun-kissed cheeks in tow.  Many paused to say thank you to the organisers, already asking if the event would return next year.

In all, the free summer event at Shiphay Park was a roaring success, a happy, heartwarming reminder of the magic that happens when a community comes together for the simple joy of a sunny day.
