Tributes have been paid to a young bin lorry worker who died in an accident on the rounds in Torquay.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the tragedy which happened in Higher Warberry Road at 12.43pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called after reports of a collision involving a white SWISCo bin lorry and a member of the crew.

The man, in his 20s and from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A statement from Torbay Council said: "Today we are sharing the sad news of the passing of a SWISCo operative following an incident involving one of our SWISCo trucks on Tuesday, May 27.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are first and foremost with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time. We are doing everything we can to support those affected and are in contact with the family providing any assistance they may need.

"The safety and wellbeing of our teams is our highest priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. We ask for patience and understanding as we work through the details."

Police are appealing for witnesses.  Officers are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage that may assist their investigation to contact them via the police website or by calling 101, quoting log 330 of 27 May.
