Fine weather brings excellent fishing across South Devon

Summer fishing continues to bring good results in South Devon
After returning from Bulgaria following my first overseas holiday since before Covid, there was plenty of catching up to do — although, unfortunately, there were no holiday fish to report.
On the boat scene, Paul Inkpen enjoyed a short trip from Minehead aboard Sofiya Charters, catching plenty of smoothhounds before rounding off the session with a superb spotted ray.
Closer to home, Brixham's charter boats are reporting good numbers of medium-sized pollack and bass, while Spot On has also been finding John Dory.
The boat has completed its first tuna trip of the season with several of the powerful sportfish brought alongside before being released. The tuna season should now gather pace, with Spot On joined by Our Joe and Silver Halo offering trips.
Brixham SAC's evening competitions on the Breakwater have also concluded, with the latest event won by Shay Upham, whose 3lb 9oz bass took top spot. Bass filled the next four positions as well.
Regular contributor Tony White, a keen lure angler, has been enjoying plenty of bass from estuaries and open beaches on soft plastics. He has also taken to kayak fishing, finding some excellent surface action on floating plugs and poppers.
The Russell family from Brixham continue to enjoy plenty of success. Youngest member Oliver landed a 3lb 10oz thick-lipped mullet, while brother Brody caught a 1lb 1oz garfish from Brixham Breakwater. Dad Russell completed the family haul with a fine 6lb 6oz bass.
The Algar family also enjoyed excellent sport around Plymouth, catching mullet and ballan wrasse.
Small-boat anglers are reminded that the Angling Trust Wyvern Small Boat Championship takes place at Salcombe on September 19 and 20. Entry is just £20 for two days, with some excellent prizes on offer.
And please keep those fishing photographs coming to [email protected] for the FOM competition, kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Farm Angling Centre.
