Another big trophy for Sam Tolchard
Torbay bowls champion Sam Tolchard has won the singles gold medal in the 2025 Bowls World Cup in Malaysia, defeating Dinesh Kumar from India in the final.
Tolchard, a member at Torquay United Bowls Club, picked up the global title after a thrilling tournament, which acts as ideal preparation for the Commonwealthe Games in Glasgow next summer.
“It is amazing, I don’t think it will sink in for a while,” said Tolchard. “The field here is amazing, so to come out on top is a great feeling.
“The final was a bit of a blur, I just tried to get on my length, which I managed to do for long parts. I got in front in both sets, which is key in this short format. Also, having people take care of all the small things and just being able to play has been great.
“I’ve personally never played in such a high-quality event, the field was amazing, and playing on the actual portables that will be very similar to the Commonwealth Games next year will be a huge plus.”
Tolchard already has a number of national titles to his name and started 2025 at the top of the England rankings.
