Gulls stay in the title hunt

Torquay United Women comfortably extended their winning run to seven games with a 4-0 demolition of Bishops Lydeard at Plainmoor.

With the sun shining on Mother’s Day, the Gulls knew a win was essential to maintain pressure on leaders Marine Academy Plymouth in the South West Women’s Football League, and they delivered a sizzling performance in front of an excellent crowd at TQ1.

The visitors are struggling at the wrong end of the division and soon found their defences breached when the prolific Lucy Solloway picked her spot for the opening goal.

United’s second was an absolute peach from Emily Elliott, smashing into the top corner to give her team the comfort of a two-goal cushion at the half-time break. Victory was then sealed by another super strike from Ellie Bishop and Tee Kaptein rounded off the perfect day with a free-kick.

United have five games to play in the season and sit nine points behind Marine Academy with three games in hand. It could all come down to the trip to Plymouth on the penultimate weekend of the season (May 4), and just to make things more interesting, the goal difference between the two teams is virtually identical.
