The countdown to the spectacular Bay of Lights has begun.
The countdown to the spectacular Bay of Lights has begun.
With an exciting opening night and a vibrant programme of live music and entertainment, this year’s event is set to be the most spectacular yet.
The Illumination Trail is officially launched on Friday November 29.
Organisers have been working hard behind the scenes to make this year’s Illumination Trail, and the surrounding Bay of Lights events, better than ever.
For the first time, there will be a special opening night on Friday November 29 with live local music and plenty of festive cheer. The event will take place at the new Harbour Public Realm Space on The Strand in Torquay which is scheduled for completion in the coming weeks.
Live music acts will take to the harbourside stage from 6pm to 9pm, with performances from Razzmatazz Youth Theatre, acoustic singer and songwriter Emma Pick, and guitar duo AJ & Elliot. Everyone is welcome to attend, and entry is free.
Live music will continue to take place on The Strand from 6pm to 9pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening until Saturday December 21.
The harbourside stage has been purposely integrated with the Illumination Trail to offer visitors the chance to enjoy live music as they explore the dazzling light displays.
Visitors can begin their Trail journey at Torre Abbey where they’ll find a fantastic new Christmas Market and “Torre Abbey: Alive with Light” projection show, celebrating 800 years of Christmas traditions at the Abbey.
The market will offer an array of holiday treats, unique gifts, and artisanal crafts. With over 30 local stalls and food traders, fun family activities and two atmospheric bars offering the best of the South West, there’s plenty to enjoy.
From there, visitors can wander through the enchanting Tunnel of Lights and stroll along the scenic seafront promenade. Finally, they can explore the vibrant harbourside, where live music awaits.
The Bay of Lights Illumination Trail is made possible by Torbay Council, The English Riviera BID Company, SWISCo and the creator of the light displays local company Future Technical Solutions alongside the generous support of local sponsors. Their contributions ensure that the Bay of Lights remains a free event for all to enjoy.
The Trail forms part of the Bay of Lights initiative. This incorporates everything from the Brixham Lanterns, Lights & Illuminations across the bay, the Christmas Train of Lights from Paignton as well as seasonal events at local attractions including Kents Cavern and Model Village.
Torquay’s inner harbour is excited to join the Bay of Lights festivities with a friendly competition for the best-decorated vessel. Participants are encouraged to deck out their boats with vibrant, festive lights, creating a luminous spectacle on the water for visitors to enjoy. Judging will take place on Saturday December 21 with the winner receiving a £100 cash prize, courtesy of the English Riviera BID Company.
Jackie Thomas, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events and Corporate Services at Torbay Council said: "We are thrilled to invite everyone to experience the magic of the Bay of Lights. With an exciting opening night, live music and more light installations in the Illumination Trail than ever before, this year’s event is set to be better than ever. We encourage residents and visitors alike to come along, explore the beautiful English Riviera, and create unforgettable memories with family and friends.’’
Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera BID Company said: “The Bay of Lights initiative aims to bring joy to the local community whilst attracting visitors to our region. This year we’re delighted to have a wide range of festive activities and events which will bring the English Riviera to life and help people to celebrate the magic of Christmas.’’
