43 new affordable homes have been completed for local people in Torquay.

The brand-new Gulls Close development, on the site of the former Hatfield House, in Hatfield Road, features a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments, all available for affordable rent.

The high-quality new homes were delivered by Sanctuary, one of the UK's largest social housing providers. They have been part-funded by Homes England and were built by construction partner, Lovell.

Situated less than a mile from Torquay town centre, the new development features two apartments specifically designed for wheelchair users, while nine of the new homes are for people aged 55 and over.

The development was named Gulls Close, in tribute to Torquay United.

Torbay MP Steve Darling and representatives from Torbay Council came to the new development to mark the completion and look around the new homes.

Mr Darling said: “Sanctuary have excelled themselves with the delivery of these homes that are affordable to rent and run. This is a small but significant step in bridging the housing need in Torbay.”

Cllr Alan Tyerman, Cabinet Member for Housing and Finance at Torbay Council, said: “Increasing the supply of affordable housing is a priority for Torbay Council, and I’m happy to see that this new development will provide apartments for young families, wheelchair users, and people aged 55 and over.

“Housing development is an important driver of economic growth, and a continued increase in housing supply in Torbay is vital to keeping rent and house prices more affordable for everyone.”

Chris Cole, our Development Director – England, commented: “We’re committed to investing in communities and helping to meet the established need for more affordable homes.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve been able to deliver these high-quality new homes for people in Torbay.”
