Community Matters: Something for everyone this summer

A word from the community builder for St Marychurch, Babbacombe & Maidencombe

Community Matters: Something for everyone this Summer

St Marychurch, Babbacombe and Maidencombe are busy as ever with much to look forward to this spring and summer.

From groups and activities to the Reddenhill Road Midsummer’s Street Party and the ever-popular Babbacombe Fair, there is something for everyone.

Red, white and blue will be the colours on Wednesday 7 May from 2pm to 4pm. We will be marking VE Day's 80th anniversary with an afternoon of celebration and remembrance at the Central Conservative Club, 226 Union Street, Torquay TQ2 5QS. This is a time for the community to get together and celebrate with a good old knees up whilst remembering the many that never came home.

For more information about the event, please contact me. Whether you are a veteran, remember VE Day or want to join in, everyone is welcome. People are welcome to come in red, white and blue or 1940s-style attire!

The Riveira Parkinsons Friends (formerly Parkinsons Support Group) meet at the Medway Centre, Medway Road, Watcombe, TQ2 8SA, on the third Thursday of every month, 1-2 pm.

It is a great opportunity to connect with others, pick up some information and enjoy a cuppa and a chat. Facebook – Riviera Parkinson’s friends

Also, there is another way for people with Parkinson’s to connect and take part in gentle physical activity. Nick is a wonderful Tai Chi teacher, and he is running weekly classes for people with Parkinson’s at the Windmill Centre on Monday afternoons from 2pm.

Family carers can also meet together in the lounge and have formed a wonderful peer support group for each other. If you know anyone with Parkinson’s, this is a very supportive and special group.

It costs £6 per session.

Contact details for Nick are 07968174934 and info@devontaichicentre.com.

Come and join our Afternoon Disco with DJ Chris Hill at the Conservative Club in St Marychurch. Such a fabulous, fun atmosphere as well as meeting new people and friends. The Discos are on the fourth Thursday of the month (except June and December, which will be the second Thursday) from 2 to 4 pm. It cost just £1.00. You don’t have to boogie, as you can sit and enjoy the music. We take requests too!

Back due to popular demand, we are holding another Craft Fair on 31 May, 11 am – 3.30 pm at the Sailing Club (next to the Co-op in St.Marychurch). Come and join us for superb craft stalls, tea and coffee as well as delicious home-made cakes. We are raising funds for Torbay Communities. More dates for the year to be confirmed.

As we move further on into the year, don’t forget – and how could we? The Midsummer’s Street Party on Reddenhill Road, Babbacombe, is on 21 June, 12.30 – 6pm. Organisers plan to make it even bigger and better this year with dozens of stalls and activities for all ages. Last year was a wonderful day, and this year the event will be amazing.

In the area there are so many groups going on, including the Small Dog Lovers group, community skittles, gentle evening strolls, lunch clubs, community carvery, Book Club, craft workshops at the Scrapstore and a full weekly programme of activities and groups at the Precinct Social Centre for people over the age of 55.

As always, please get in touch with me if you would like to know more information on all of the above. I am always happy to help.
