Long-serving councillor to take up civic role

Long-serving councillor Swithin Long is to be the new Mayor of Torbay.
The deputy leader of Torbay Council’s Liberal Democrat group, Cllr Long represents the Barton with Watcombe ward in Torquay. He is the council’s overview and scrutiny lead for place development, economic growth and culture.
He joined the council in 2017.
Putting his name forward for the post of ceremonial mayor for 2024/25, Cllr Mandy Darling (Lib Dem, Tormohun) said: “He will make an excellent mayor.
“He is very compassionate and embedded in his community. When I was mayor he supported me a great deal. I know he will be very good and I wish him well.”
Deputy mayor will be Cllr Kelly Harvey (Lib Dem, St Marychurch), who first joined the council in May last year.
Torbay no longer has an elected mayor, but retains one whose ceremonial duties include chairing all meetings of the full council. Cllr Long takes up his new role in May.
