In the 1960s, Torquay wasn’t just a seaside resort – it was a star-studded stop on the circuit for some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Among them was the iconic Eartha Kitt – singer, actress, activist and global sensation.
Eartha visited Torquay during the 1960s, and local memories help bring that moment to life. One resident shared on social media: “When we were kids she did a show in Torquay. The next day we were driving past the Grand Hotel and there was Eartha Kitt on the tennis court with her young daughter.”
Photographs from the time show Eartha with her daughter Kitt McDonald (now Shapiro) and Philip L. Osborne at Torquay Station and outside the New Grand Hotel.
Her visit places her among a glittering line-up of legends who graced the Bay in the 60s, from Gene Vincent in 1961 to The Beatles’ only Torquay show in 1963.
