Young athletes do Bay proud at national championships

Torbay Weekly

Torbay Athletic Club had four athletes amongst the 40 selected to represent Devon schools at the All England schools track and field championships held at Sportcity, Manchester.

After having to gain the tough qualifying standards from last months Devon schools and South West schools championships, just being selected is an excellent achievement. In the junior boys, Aaron Smith, (Churston) placed 11th in the triple jump setting a new personal best and new club record with a best of 11.65m.

In the Inter boys, Joshua Taylor, (Spires) after making the final last year in the hurdles at junior level, placed 6th in his 100m hurdles heat in 14.37 sec.At senior girl level, the club had two girls selected. Estelle Roots (TGGS) had an excellent run in the 100m heat in 12.19 sec qualifying for the following day’s final where she placed 8th in 12.31 sec.

In the triple jump, Georgina Scoot, currently ranked number one under 20 in the UK rankings had an under par competition by her high standards, placing 3rd with a best jump of 12.32m, her third medal at English schools level.

With the high performance athletes competing at the English schools event, the emerging talent from the Torquay based club in its junior ranks was on display at the annual Pearson cup competition staged for the eight 12-yearolds from the four local athletic clubs based in South Devon. Not a large turn out from the Torbay club, but not lacking in quality, evident by winning five out of the six individual age group awards.

The overall Team results were 1st South Devon 319, 2nd Torbay 224, 3rd Newton Abbot 179, 4th Dartmouth 139.
