Wimbleball Regatta abandoned with boats capsizing in high winds

Torbay Weekly

Wimbleball Regatta, the third regatta in the West of England ARA ten regatta Championship series, was abandoned after race 14 due to the conditions on Wimbleball Lake which set high in the hills of Exmoor in Somerset.

The regatta had attracted 207 entries necessitating 57 races but as the regatta progressed conditions soon worsened with the wind blowing down the course and the strong gusts creating waves with ‘white horses’.

An alternative course on another arm of the lake was considered but with several boats capsizing near the boating area, and sailing dinghies further down the lake capsizing, the decision to abandon racing was made with only four Championship events held.

The next Championship regatta is at Exeter on July 9.
