Will fans be back for Gulls' final home game of season?

Torbay Weekly

With the National League title race finally in their own hands, Torquay United are working on welcoming back fans to Plainmoor for the final home game of the regular season - against Barnet on Saturday, May 22.

The Gulls had made no firm announcement going to press, but I understand that they, like most of their pursuers, are hoping to have up to 2,000 Covid-limited supporters for what could be a decisive fixture on the penultimate weekend of the campaign.

Gary Johnson's men have staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in the club's history - 31 points out of 36 - after it looked as if they had blown their chance only seven weeks ago.

Over a dramatic May bank holiday weekend, the top of the table was transformed.

United beat play-off chasing Eastleigh home (3-1) and Chesterfield away (2-0) - their first-ever league win in north Derbyshire - equalling a club record 12th victory on the road.

Gulls fans had got used to last-gasp 'Gary-Time' goals this season, but they never dreamed that it would happen elsewhere.

On Tuesday, second-placed Sutton United looked odds-on to cut Torquay's lead to three points, still with a game in hand, as ten-man Notts County defended a 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane.

But in the fourth minute of stoppage-time a foul on former United defender Mark Ellis gave Notts a penalty, Ruben Rodrigues converted to win it 3-2 and Sutton are now four points adrift.

Johnson, who described his players as 'warriors' at Chesterfield, stresses: "We've given ourselves a great chance but we haven't won anything yet and a lot can still happen over the last four games."

United host Bromley on Saturday (5.20pm BT Sport), travel to third-placed Stockport County (May 15), play Barnet home and Altrincham away (May 29).

Meanwhile, the club is mourning the death of former United (1986-87), Portsmouth and Eire international midfielder Alan McLoughlin, who has died of cancer at the age of only 54.
