What is Torbay’s Story?

Torbay is an outstanding place to live, work, and visit.

Jim Parker

Torbay is an outstanding place to live, work, and visit.

We know that, but we need to tell more people about who we are and what we can offer.

To help with this, over the past year a piece of work has taken place where a forward looking, positive and interesting story of Torbay has been developed.

Torbay Together Partnership, a group of passionate Torbay organisations and businesses who want to improve the Bay, has been speaking with a range of people who live and work here.

They wanted to understand what makes Torbay, and it's three towns of Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, unique. The result of this is Torbay’s Story.

The Torbay Together Partnership came together in 2017. Its members range from Torbay Council to South Devon College, from Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to the English Riviera BID Company, and many more.

Together they are working towards putting Torbay on the map. Highlighting to those who live and work here and beyond what we can offer.

They are doing this to attract investment, inspire future generations, create jobs and attract funding from Government.

Torbay Together launched Torbay’s Story and this fresh approach at a virtual event on January 12, 2022.

The launch covered how everyone can work together to shout about what makes Torbay an outstanding place to live, work, and visit.

How we can all share the messages about the stunning natural environment and the wide and varied business and culture that thrive here in the Bay.

So what makes Torbay special?

While a magnet for tourists, the beautiful Tor Bay and its stunning natural environment also hosts hi-tech businesses and a vibrant arts and cultural scene.

The Bay hosts many businesses that are successful globally, like Lumentum, Gooch & Housego, Spirent and Effect Photonics.

These businesses, and many more, push the boundaries in environmental services, marine engineering, water testing and the science of light.

Together they make up the hi-tech cluster. Bringing a whole new meaning to ‘surf’ by the sea, not just on it!

Here in Torbay, you can connect in so many ways with the nature all around it. From the countryside to the seaside, our beautiful blue and green playground.

After a busy day, the Bay offers you the opportunity to chill out with wild water swimming or many other water sports.

Or you could walk the miles of coast path, finding new coves to explore on your way. And if you get thirsty or peckish, sample the wide range of local food and drink produced right here in the Bay.

Throw in the Bay’s UNESCO GeoPark, the birthplace for Agatha Christie and links to the Singer Family. Torbay is the most amazing place to work and live. A place for enthralling experiences and inspiration.

What’s next?

We now all need to be shouting about Torbay. Tell everyone you meet about what our place offers. Talk to those who live here as well as those that want to invest here.

The Partnership will do this by getting the message to Government, private investors, potential visitors, potential start-up businesses and many more but they need your help and support to spread the word wider.

If you want to get involved in raising awareness of Torbay, then why not become a Torbay Champion?

Come along to regular events and hear from those who are putting Torbay on the map. Find out what’s happening from tourism, businesses to regeneration in the Bay.
