Weight loss support and guidance from the Healthy Lifestyles Team

Torbay Weekly

This week, Andy Simpson, deputy service manager from the Healthy Lifestyles Service at Torbay Hospital, talks about the support available to help people live healthier lives and achieve a healthy weight:

The past year has been a challenging one for many of us, with periods of lockdown and for those required to shield, we have had to change the way we live our lives.

We have seen that these enforced changes can have an impact on our health and wellbeing.

For some, this has meant a reduction in physical activity, changes to eating habits, increased alcohol consumption and changes to mood and mental health.

During this time, we have learned a great deal about Covid-19 and it has become apparent that adopting a healthy lifestyle is one of the positive ways you can reduce your chances of becoming ill with the virus.

Being a healthy weight, being physically active and not smoking are all protective factors which will reduce risk and complications from Covid-19.

So, if you’re concerned about being overweight, there is support available to help you.

If you are overweight, taking positive action to sensibly reduce your weight is likely to also help manage other potential health risks.

For example, research shows that being overweight increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

We recognise that we may need support and guidance to help us manage our weight, which is why the Healthy Lifestyles Team is providing weight management on referral.

We are doing this for The 1:1 Diet (formerly known as the Cambridge Weight Plan), WW (Weightwatchers health solutions) and Slimming World programmes.

We also offer support with eating more healthily through our health coaching service.

We are able to provide fully funded places on Slimming World and WW groups and subsidised access to The 1:1 Diet.

Each programme has a different offer.

Slimming World provides weekly group support through a warm and friendly community of people to help you make gradual changes towards a healthy lifestyle.

At group sessions members celebrate achievements, share experiences, recipes and food and activity ideas, and make plans to achieve targets and overcome challenges in the week ahead.

An app makes it easy for members to track and plan meals, and access their favourite digital features from a smartphone.

All groups are run by a trained consultant who has lost weight with the programme.

WW is run by a WW coach who is trained in weight loss and nutrition.

WW workshops offer a friendly, supportive environment, where everyone is working towards the common goal of healthy weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

Users also have access to the WW app, with advice and guidance, meal planners, recipes, and support from expert coaches.

The 1:1 Diet is a flexible weight loss programme using nutritionally balanced meal replacement products, either as complete meal replacements or in conjunction with conventional food.

There are six different programmes (called steps) offering a different daily calorie intake depending on your height, weight, job, age, lifestyle and any medications or medical conditions.

There are over 40 meal replacement products to choose from including a range of tasty smoothies, porridge, shakes, soups, bars and savoury meals.

Weekly support is also provided by a Team Torbay 1:1 Diet consultant to help clients along their weight loss journey.
