Two wins in two days for title-hungry young Gulls

Using their squad strength in depth to cover two important games in just over 24 hours, Torquay United Under-18s produced top performances to keep their hopes of a league-and-cup 'treble' firmly on track.

The visit of South West Counties Youth League rivals Bridgwater United to South Devon College was a showdown between the two best sides in the competition, and it did not disappoint as the young Gulls deservedly won 3-2 in a high-quality match.

Chris Todd's team led 3-1 at half-time. Lewis Brookes made the breakthrough after 21 minutes, heading home a Brandon Quinn cross, Callum Thomas lashed an opportunist second into the roof of the net, with Brookes in the 'sin-bin' at the time, and Theo Cadby scored the third from Sammy Stayt's cross.

Bridgwater fought hard, pulling it back 3-2 early in the second half, but from then on, only their goalkeeper stood between United and a bigger win, with outstanding saves from Brookes, Quinn and Cadby, who also hit the post.

United, who need only a point from their last two games to clinch the title, returned to the SDC Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon to rout Plymouth Parkway 7-1 in the Wotton Printers Devon Youth Cup Semi-Finals.

A Jayden Gllbert hat-trick and goals by Stayt, Quinn, Cadby and Jack Mogg earned a Final meeting with Tavistock Community Youth at Devon County FA's Coach Road HQ in Newton Abbot next month (tbc).

Quinn and Cadby also scored as Paignton's Pro Direct Academy beat Oaklands College (St Albans) 2-1 in the Quarter-Finals of the English Colleges FA Championship.

That win will send the Academy on a long Semi-Final trip to North Wales to meet Coleg Cambria next Tuesday (2pm).

This Saturday (10.30am), United U18s meet Yeovil Town at SDC in the postponed SW League Cup Semi-Finals, as they continue their hunt for multiple trophies.

United Ladies did not play last weekend and, having seen llminster Ladies take over as SW Womens League Premier Division leaders, they are at home (Stoke Gabriel FC) to St Austell Ladies this Sunday (2pm).
