Torquay United to play five games pre-season

Torbay Weekly

Torquay United have added a fifth game to their pre-season schedule, and a third match against EFL opposition - League Two Newport County will visit Plainmoor on Saturday, July 16 (writes Dave Thomas).

Gary Johnson's Gulls will still open their warm-up campaign away to Buckland Athletic (July 8) and then Southern League newcomers Exmouth Town (July 12), managed by ex-Plainmoor favourite Kevin Hill.

But they will then launch into three tougher home games in the space of seven days - Newport and Devon League One neighbours Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City.

After the Ambers' visit on the 16th (3pm), United will face Argyle three days later (July 19 7.45pm) and Exeter the following Saturday (July 23 3pm).

The programme looks more testing than Torquay were able to arrange at shorter notice after their June 20 Play-Off Final defeat last year.

Johnson is expected to announce his first summer signings next week.

That should help boost season-ticket sales, which the club says are already healthy, before the 'Early Bird' price offer runs out next Friday (June 3).
