Torquay United kicking off 2022/23 season with home game

Torquay United have been given a home game on the opening day of the season for the fifth time in six seasons - the Gulls will meet relegated Oldham Athletic at Plainmoor on Saturday, August 6.

The National League programme was released today (Wednesday, July 6) and hands Gary Johnson's men a busy August and September of 11 matches.

Oldham, the first former Premier League club ever be relegated to the National League, and Torquay haven't met since their League One days in 2004-2005.

After the Latics, United will play FC Halifax Town and Bromley away and Boreham Wood on August 20 at home.

United will once again face Westcountry rivals Yeovil Town, now managed by former Gulls captain and manager Chris Hargreaves, twice over Christmas - at Plainmoor on Boxing Day and Huish Park on New Year's Day.

But there will be no fixture between those two holiday derbies.

Bromley, Solihull Moors and newly-promoted Dorking Wanderers are all midweek games.

And the regular campaign will finish at home to pre-season favourites Wrexham on Saturday, April 19.

The play-off final is set earlier than usual - on May 13 at a venue still be to be decided.

On Tuesday, United made 22-year-old centre-back Ross Marshall from Stevenage their sixth senior signing of the summer.

And elsewhere, ex-Gulls goalkeeper Lucas Covolan has moved from League One Port Vale to Torquay's NL rivals Chesterfield on a season-long loan.

And former Plainmoor loanee defender Sam Sherring has joined Northampton Town on a two-year contract from AFC Bournemouth.
