Torquay host fourth coastal rowing regatta of league
Torquay Rowing Club hosted the fourth event in the FISA coastal rowing regatta calendar of the Southwest Coastal Rowing League.
The Thatcher Rock Offshore racing was scheduled to be rowed over 6k and 4k but an early morning inspection of the course ruled out any circumvention of Thatcher Rock with massive seas.
A quickly re-arranged course in Tor Bay was contrived with races over 5k and 3k.
Needless to say that as the racing progressed the rainy and rough sea turned to calm and sunshine.
First race of the day was the men’s quad with the Torquay crew of Stuart Williams, Kevin Bowers, Kevin Weyman, Michael Williams and cox, Stuart Williams, taking a creditable sixth place. River Teign Rowing club’s A crew were first and their B crew seventh.
In the ladies' quads, Torquay’s crew of Michele Sandhu, Barbara Mears, Hannah Guest, Jane Nicholls and cox, Ian Wilson, were fifth.
Torquay’s masters double sculls crew of Maurice Dunn and Ian Wilson, who had no opposition, raced with the masters single sculls boats.
They completed the course despite the fact that the boat filled up with water because they had neglected to put the stopper in!
