Torbay Tigers win basketball title on dramatic final day

Torbay Weekly

Torbay Tigers went into the final week of the regular basketball season with their search for the Division 1 title firmly in their hands, they had two games to play, the first away to current leaders Spartan Nomads I - win that match and the title was theirs.

The first quarter ended with Spartan Nomads leading 14 -12 and, as the 2nd quarter progressed, Nomads turned the screw and wrapped up the half 30 - 24 up.

If Torbay were going to win this game, they needed to find their shooting boots in the 3rd quarter. Jack Davey was up for the challenge, and he hit seven points, supported by team-mates, to eradicate the deficit and finish the quarter 42 all.

The title could come down to just 10 minutes of play, and as often as the ball hit the ring in the 3rd quarter Tigers lost their way in the 4th and couldn't buy a basket. Nomads and MVP Ryan Parker-Bowker flourished, and the game slipped from Tigers grip, the roar of the Tiger was silenced and with a disappointing whimper the game ended with a Nomads win 63 - 49.

It came down to a home game against current Champions QE Crediton Chargers. Win the game and the title was theirs, lose and the title would go to Spartan Nomads.

Player of the season Finn Evans was in no mood to disappoint and he went out on the court like a player possessed, in the first six minutes he scored 16 points against Chargers' 15, just on his own. The Tigers closed the 1st quarter leading 28 - 19.

Captain Keiron Palmer never allowed his team to take their foot off the gas and, leading from the front, they finished the half with a convincing 54 - 35 in the lead.

In the 3rd quarter, they outscored their rivals by five points, and all the bench players were playing their part. The Tigers controlled the final quarter and cruised to victory 99 - 65.

Congratulations Torbay Tigers, the 20222 champions of the Exeter and District Basketball League.
