Torbay children’s services are currently looking for a wide range of new foster carers to care for local, vulnerable children who are unable live with their birth families.
Fostering is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and is also your opportunity to make a real difference to a child’s life and wellbeing.
This is the perfect time to make a positive change if you are considering a new work/life balance.
If you have flexible working hours, a spare room, and a kind heart, you could become Torbay foster carer.
Children are fostered when they can’t live at home with their birth families. It’s usually a short-term arrangement before a child returns home, moves to live with relatives or is adopted, but some children remain in long-term foster care until they are 18.
There are different types of fostering available, from emergency to short breaks to resilience fostering and long term.
While no two children are the same, neither are the types of foster carers that are needed.
To meet the diverse needs of vulnerable children, we are looking for a diverse mix of foster carers.
Increasing the number of local foster carers is essential to care for children who wish to stay living in the community that they know.
At what might feel like the most vulnerable time in a child’s life, being able to remain familiar surroundings and stay in their school can make a huge difference to their sense of security.
You could provide a safe and nurturing environment and provide the stability for a child to concentrate on their schoolwork and instil confidence for years to come.
Anyone can foster with the right support, you can be married, single, gay, or straight, young or old, and from any background. You can own or rent your home, live in social housing, have a disability or a job – although your work must fit around the needs of the child. It doesn’t matter if you have your own children or not.
The kind of person you are, is the most important thing about being a foster carer.
If your own children have left home but you still have a lot of love to give, child fostering might be the beginning of a rewarding new chapter in your life.
Dave is Torbay foster carer: “It reminds me why I wanted to be a parent in the first place, all those years ago - it’s pretty much a recreation of something that was wonderful.
“I would recommend fostering in Torbay because it’s such a wonderful experience. It’s wonderful to give something to a child who otherwise may not have the same opportunities that my own children have had.”
Cllr Cordelia Law, Cabinet member for children’s services, Torbay Council, said: “The best possible gift you can give a child is a safe, happy and stable home.
"As we approach the festive season and thoughts increasingly turn to next year which may include making resolutions, I'd like to ask Torbay residents to take a moment to think about whether they could help us keep a looked after child in the Bay where they belong.”
Torbay foster carers are financially supported with an allowance to meet the needs of the foster child and receive professional training and an ongoing network of support.
By fostering a child, you have the incredible opportunity to change a life, but fostering is also a way of life and a career option for those people with the right qualities.
As a Torbay foster carer, you are never on your own, you have your own dedicated fostering social worker and an experienced foster carer as mentor.
