Two Torbay fish and chip shops have been named among the 50 best takeaways in the country.
David’s Fish and Chips in Brixham is thrilled to have been awarded a place on this year’s list of the UK’s top 50 takeaways.
Fry Magazine, the leading trade publication for the fish and chip sector, announced the UK’s 50 best takeaways and 10 best restaurants 2021/22 following months of mystery dining.
Judges made unannounced visits to each competition entrant to assess aspects of the business including the quality of the food, cleanliness, customer service and social media presence.
The standard was extremely high, with takeaways needing to score at least 96 out of 100, and restaurants at least 95 out of 100, in order to win an award.
Among the 50 are two Torbay businesses - David's Fish and Chips in Brixham and DJ''s Fish and Chips in Paignton.
David’s Fish and Chips is still waiting to receive its feedback but owner Scott Drew was delighted to learn that the shop has once again received the accolade.
The shop also made it onto the list in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
He said: “We’ve won it four times but not every year. This year was harder as we had two mystery shop visits instead of one.
“It’s one of the most prestigious awards for fish and chip shops and it’s recognition that we know what we’re doing, so I’m very proud.
“We don’t know yet who was on duty for our mystery visits so this award is testament to the hard work of all the staff.
“It’s been a very trying year for us, as it has been for all businesses, so it’s nice to have some great news.”
Competition organiser Reece Head said: “We’re so pleased to announce this year’s winners. The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication that these operators put into running their businesses.
“It’s been a tough couple of years for the industry but operators continued to adapt, motivate their workforce and invest in new equipment and systems that have seen them come out the other side stronger and in a better position.
“Our 50 best takeaway and 10 best restaurant winners really do represent the best in the business and they continue to showcase fish and chips as a high quality, value for money meal.”
David’s Fish and Chips in Bolton Street celebrated its centenary last year.
Owner Scott Drew has been associated with the shop for the last 34 years.
Scott, who is now 48, started working at the shop aged 14 and worked his way up the ladder, eventually taking over when owner David Manley retired 12 years ago.
