The dust settles on another fantastic week of racing for Torbay Tri Club

Torbay Weekly

Cleaners, gardeners and decorators may wish to get in touch with Torbay Tri Club to offer their assistance, as it appears not a single sofa cushion was plumped, no garden lawn mown or wall painted in any club members’ homes this weekend; only tri-suits and kit were washed and readied, to Hoover up medals across the country.

Channelling their inner von Trapps, many of #teamtango took to the hills, with Kevin Lofts, Louise Lewry and Debbie Burman conquering the Dartmoor Discovery 32-mile run in speedy fashion, and Chris Kay bounding over Pembrokeshire’s Preseli Hills in a tough 18-mile challenge.

Duathlon duo Julian Smith and Dave Brown climbed every mountain in Snowdonia at the European Championships Sprint qualifier.

With Julian finishing 12th overall and second in his age group in 1:21:44, and Dave sixth in age group in 1:31:02, both now wait to find out if they have GB team places.

Middle distance long course triathlon fun continued this week, both abroad in Geraardsbergen in Belgium, where Laraine Gibbins and Peter Hayward collected ribbons for their fourth and ninth age group placings in 6:58:29 and 5:41:03, and in Staffordshire, where Bobby Singh and Michael Cash took on the tough 70.3 half-Ironman.

All routes were no doubt stunning in terms of scenery, but it’s mission impossible to beat the beautiful Devon coastline on blue-sky days.

A weekend of surf and turf racing at Sportiva’s Dartmouth Triathlon and swim multi-sport event held at Blackpool Sands saw Gary Burman plough through choppy sea conditions to take second place overall in the sprint triathlon and an age category win in 1:15:08, with Emma Beckwith first in age group in 1:25:45, Frank Reay second in age group in 1:31:34 and commendable finishes from Simon Graham and Richard Rollings.

Mermaiding their way to podium places were Rose Parkhouse, first in the WVIN60+ group in the 750m swim and Cassandra Harrison, third in WV40 group in the 1500m event.
