Torquay United recovered from the early dismissal of Ali Omar to secure a 3-1 victory over Truro City at Bolitho Park in Plymouth.
The Gulls were briefly rocked by the sending-off for Omar on seven minutes for a professional foul but a Will Goodwin header soon settled Gary Johnson’s men and the afternoon brightened even further when United were awarded a penalty on 37 minutes.
Dean Moxey calmly assumed responsibility, firing a confident spot-kick into the bottom corner. Truro responded with a penalty of their own, Tyler Harvey sending Mark Halstead the wrong way on the stroke of half-time.
As is pre-season tradition, the second period brought a raft of changes in personnel and the game lost its rhythm in patches, but United had enough in the tank to add a late third. Olaf Koszela was fouled for yet another penalty and Goodwin did the honours. On to Oldham and the real thing on Saturday.
