Harrison Wood battled through illness to finish the week-long Giro d’Italia U23 as the leading rider for Holland’s SEG Racing Academy.

The ‘Baby Giro’, won by brilliant Brit Tom Pidcock from Sheffield, attracts the best young riders in the world.

Wood, 20 from Torquay, was ill at the start but fought on in a support role for Dutch sprinter Jordi Meuss’ Stage Six victory.

Wood’s climbing talent eventually paid off with 44th overall out of 118 finishers.

“It was a super hard race, full gas every day for me on the front, but I have really learned a lot,” he said.
