Wales will go into this afternoon’s home game against Bulgaria with a great chance of taking control of their Nations League group after Paignton-born Keiffer Moore’s late goal gave them a 1-0 win over Finland in Helsinki.
After having an earlier headed goal disallowed, former Torquay United loan forward Moore, 28, drove in Daniel James’ late cross - his third goal in successive away internationals.
It rounded off a composed display by a young Welsh side, without Real Madrid star Gareth Bale who was withdrawn at half-time.
Ryan Giggs’ team will meet Bulgaria, who drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland, at Cardiff City Stadium, where Moore recently moved from Wigan Athletic for £1.75 million.
Meanwhile, another ex-Gulls player, right-back Danny Leadbitter, has joined Torquay’s National League rivals Yeovil Town on a season-long loan from League Two Newport County.
Leadbitter made 15 appearances for United 2011-2013 before spells with Hereford and Bristol Rovers.
