Shaun Pedley, skipper of Our Joe’l, reports the best of the summer pollack coming to visiting angler Steve Nickless from West Bromwich, a fish of 15lbs.

The South West species League visited Paignton this week, sadly I missed out on a great days fishing due to too many being booked on the boat and the ongoing coronavirus issues. Many species were landed including some excellent plaice by the anglers who included a couple of England internationals.

Matt Forrester, skipper of Silver Halo, took the opportunity to fish himself and landed a personal best bass of 12lb.

Anglo Dawn and Spot On have been finding plenty of fish from black bream to shark this week with first-time angler Nathan catching a John Dory, a fish many of us have never caught in a lifetime of angling. Shore fishing remains much the same with the beaches producing mackerel, bass and a few smoothhounds.

There are plenty of small bass around in the estuaries with the odd larger one among them. Float fishing for the mackerel has started to produce a few nice garfish. Brixham Breakwater seems to be the place to head to for these fun fish. Mullet are around in good number with time and patience need to catch them.

Kennick Flyfishers members Andy Watson took his son Ed to Radford reservoir and had a great day landing over 50 perch in the hot conditions.

Spring Ponds at Rocombe had another competition this week and on a very damp day saw Steve Barrell win with an excellent top weight of 50lb 8oz, Graham Fay took second spot with 39lb 8oz and Steve Hayman third with 36lb 10oz.

Bid changes are happening at Newbarn Farm with the announcement that local angler Matt Skelly has been appointed manager. Lillies have already been planted in the specimen lake to improve the habitat for the fish. Fishing here continues to be good with surface-fished baits being the favoured method, accounting for many fine carp. If you prefer to fish with bottom baits boilies will still produce as Matt’s daughter Summer proved landing a 16lb mirror carp on a prototype house boilie.
