Brixham may be a long way from California and although we do have surfing, may not have a lot in common with the ‘Golden State’.
All that is about to change - well, for one night only.
The Beach Boyz Tribute band, now in their sixth year of touring theatres and festivals in the UK and Europe, is returning to their home ground and will appear at Brixham Theatre on Saturday, October 2.
The band set out to accurately reproduce the lush harmony of the original Beach Boys group.
The Beach Boys’ songs are extremely challenging with multi-harmony layers. For that reason, there are not many Beach Boys tribute bands.
All the members of the Beach Boyz - Tommy, Andy, Terry, Cliff and Graham - are lead singers in their own right and are all able to harmonise beautifully. They are passionate about the Beach Boys’ music.
What really sealed their choice was the fact that most tribute bands must ‘look the part’ as the original artists have a distinctive appearance.
The Beatles, for example, had ‘mop-tops.’ Audiences expect their tribute experience to include the visual likeness. Few people know what the Beach Boys looked like. This makes it easier for the band to concentrate their energies on producing an authentic sound.
Audiences are routinely surprised at how accurately the musicians recreate the ‘California’ sound of the 1960s - a sound evocative of surf, sun, sports cars and romance.
To create a believable and memorable tribute act sounds, both vocal and instrumental have to be replicated in the finest detail.
The original Beach Boys formed in 1961 and had their first national hit in 1963 with ‘Surfin’ USA’.
They are one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands of all time, selling more than 100million records worldwide.
Their material ranged from the sophisticated, lovely song ‘God Only Knows’ to the raunchy masterpiece ‘Good Vibrations.’
Between 1961 and 2010, 36 of their songs made it into the US Top 40 - the most by any American band. In 2004, they were ranked number 12 on the Rolling Stone’s list of greatest artists of all time.
The Beach Boyz reproduce the feel and sound of the music to perfection in an entertaining, exhilarating performance.
Over the years the band has aimed at making each show more exciting and entertaining than the previous production.
Tommy, the front man, will deliver informative and funny stories about the Beach boys in between some of the songs.
The band has made two live CDs and one DVD. They are currently writing new Beach Boys-influenced songs as a tribute to the group. They hope to have these on sale for next year’s tour of the UK and may perform some numbers at Brixham Theatre.
Tickets for the 7.30pm performance at Brixham Theatre on October 2 cost £18, concessions £16, from the box office on 01803 415987 or email tickets.brixhamtheatre.uk
