Torbay is the best in the land for its B&Bs – and for a touch of romance as well.

No fewer than six of the UK’s top 25 guest houses and small hotels are based here on the Naturally Inspiring English Riviera – and we can boast the number one most romantic hotel as well.

The ratings have been released officially in the 20th annual Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards for Hotels by Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform.

Torquay’s 25 Boutique, a recent gold-award winner in the South West Tourism Awards, ranks fifth in the world and second in Europe and the UK. Andy Banner-Price, who runs the business with husband Julian, said: “We were thrilled to have made it to 5th best B&B in the world and 2nd in the UK this year.

“We’ve now been in the top ten B&Bs in the UK six years in a row which is difficult to achieve and maintain.  We’re so proud of our fellow Travellers’ Choice winners also representing the English Riviera with their wins, proving how high the quality and friendliness of the accommodation is within our world-leading resort.

“The TripAdvisor awards are an ideal opportunity to put us on a world stage and bring new visitors to the Bay.”

The Haytor Hotel in Meadfoot Road, Torquay, has been crowned Most Romantic Hotel in the UK.

John Dodds, who only bought the hotel with wife Jane in 2019, said: “We can create the ambience and atmosphere but it’s our guests who make the romance.”

In the Most Romantic Hotels category, the Haytor was named number one in the UK, seventh in Europe and 18th in the world. Also in Torquay, the Crowndale Hotel ranks seventh in the UK.

English Riviera BID Company chief executive Carolyn Custerson was delighted.  She said: “For the first time ever all of Devon’s B&B Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Awards have been awarded to B&Bs on the English Riviera.

“Based on real holidaymakers views these prestigious annual awards highlight favourite places to stay and are very much sought after by businesses to help them promote their businesses and attract new customers.

“Winning global awards like these said Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera BID Company is simply magnificent and helps us all to shout from the roof tops and about the amazing quality of accommodation we have here and raise the profile for the English Riviera. I would encourage all tourism businesses to actively encourage their customers to feedback via Tripadvisor which is the world’s largest travel guidance platform available and reaches millions.”

ERBID Company chairman Tim  Godfrey said: “This is absolutely wonderful news and a true reflection of the exceptionally high standard of B&B accommodation we have here.”

This year’s awards builds on Torquay winning Top Staycation Destination in the TripAdvisor Awards last year.
