Rugby: Crowd brave rain to see Torquay Athletic run riot against Newquay Hornets

Taking on in-form Weston-super-Mare away was always going to be a tough assignment for Brixham, but three 'yellow cards' did not help the Fishermen in a 22-7 defeat in the Tribute South West Premier Division.

Bidding for a fifth win in six games, after the Christmas/New Year break, the Fishermen encountered the same muddy conditions which forced several postponements across the region.

They scored through Jean-Pierre Simonetti's try, converted by Joel Ashworth, after fourth-placed Weston led 10-0 at half-time - when they also pulled on a clean set of shirts!

Brixham had Simonetti, Matt Crosscombe and replacement Ricky Workman all 'sin-binned', which hardly aided their cause, but they are still eighth in the table ahead of another long trip this Saturday - it's down to Cornwall to meet Camborne.

The conditions helped to produce some surprise results - leaders Exeter University and Hornets both lost, to Old Redcliffians and Launceston respectively.

Old Redcliffians (Bristol) are now up to second place, only three points behind the Uni.

The Western Counties West Division derby between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot at Bitton Park was postponed.

Covid issues left Teignmouth unable to raise a side, while the weather put paid to the Penryn-v-Paignton game.

No such problems at the Recreation Ground, where Torquay Athletic ran riot against Newquay Hornets in Cornwall/Devon Division - the Tics won 58-8 in front of another good crowd who braved the rain.

The key Devon One game between tltle-chasing duo South Molton and Kingsteignton's New Cross was abandoned after winger Joe Milburn dislocated a kneecap and sustained ligament damage.

But nearly 65 minutes had been played, with New Cross leading 12-5 in worsening conditions, and the 'result' may well stand.

The weather also dictated a low-scoring game at Dartmouth, where the hosts edged local rivals Totnes 7-0.

This Saturday's fixtures include: Paignton v Teignmouth, Newton Abbot v Tiverton, North Tawton v Torquay Athletic, New Cross v Tamar Saracens, Exeter Athletic v Dartmouth, Plymouth Argaum v Totnes.
