Riviera Singers back rehearsing after 18 months

The Riviera Singers are back rehearsing again in Brixham after a break of 18 months.

A group of the choir had an impromptu sing-a-long at the cafe in Lupton House the week before the regrouping on Wednesday, September 15.

During lockdown, musical director Margaret Johnstone prepared YouTube videos, rehearsal tracks and CDs to keep the choir on track.

Riviera Singers are a traditional ladies' choir, who sing in up to four-part harmony.

They are based in Brixham and have been in existence for more than 50 years.

Members have raised thousands of pounds for both local and national charities as well as singing for local groups plus care/retirement homes around Torbay.

Recent highlights include singing with Kurume shin –ai-Joqakuin choir, an award-winning school choir from Japan in March 2017 at Central Church, Torquay, raising money for Children’s Hospice South West.

Members even learnt a song in Japanese!

In 2019, the choir had the honour of performing a concert at Buckfast Abbey. This was very special as the acoustics in the abbey are amazing, said a Riviera Singers spokesperson.

Next June, they have been invited to sing at Brixham’s 70th anniversary celebrations of the Queen’s reign.

They have a varied repertoire of music ranging from sacred pieces, music from the shows, popular songs and several humorous ones - rehearsals are never boring!

Riviera Singers try to hold at least two formal concerts a year where they host visiting choirs. Quite often this results in being invited back to sing on their home territory.

They sing at more informal events, for groups and organisations and are very popular at Christmas when they visit care/residential homes to sing traditional carols, old Christmas favourites combined with more contemporary Christmas songs.

During lockdown it has been well documented that singing is good for both physical and mental health and the Singers are currently are looking for new members.
