Residents given chance to pop in at pop-ups for Covid jabs

Torbay Weekly

More than 1,000 people have been jabbed at special Torbay Covid vaccination pop-up clinics, according to latest figures.

Torbay Council and Devon NHS Clinical Commissioning Group jointly decided in the autumn of last year to organise the clinics to complement the regular sessions being held at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay.
A number of locations were chosen around the Bay to make it easy for people to access their jabs.
Out of business hours, including Saturday and Sunday dates, were also offered to give working residents even more choice to access a vaccination.
Clinics were initially offered to over 18s only but have gradually been opened up to under 18s and now to the 12 to 15 age group.

The first clinic was held on October 25 in Paignton town centre. Since then, a further 13 pop-ups have been held, including one at South Devon College which was open to students and staff. In total, 1020 people have been vaccinated at the pop-ups. People have been offered first, second, third and booster doses.
To help promote some of the autumn clinics at the end of 2021, Torbay Council enlisted UKHSA funding which was made available to local authorities needing additional assistance with vaccination programmes.
This involved working closely with RE:SILIENT, a specialist planning, deployment and implementation team.
The team carried out door to door engagement and leaflet distribution within a defined area the day before the clinic.
They targeted areas of the Bay where take-up of the vaccine was very low.
Torbay Council’s Public Health team are now running the design and delivery of the pop-ups across the Bay. They are able to do this with the support of the NHS Outreach team, local venues, the Torbay Weekly and the volunteers, which all contribute massively to enabling these clinics to take place.
Four further clinics have been confirmed:
Friday February 11: Abbey Hall, Abbey Road, Torquay, TQ2 5SP
Saturday February 12: Scala Hall, New Road, Brixham, TQ5 8TA
Friday February 18: St Boniface Church, Belfield Road, Paignton, TQ3 3UZ
Sunday February 27: Eat That Frog, The Pad, 89 Torquay Rd, Paignton, TQ3 2SE
