Record fish caught in a special week for local anglers

Torbay Weekly

A week away from angling coupled with the second round of the South-West Sea League saw anglers creeping out of the woodwork everywhere.

Bullhuss seemed to be one of the target species and two anglers did very well, both producing club records. Pete Clarke travelled to the north coast and landed a superb fish of 13lbs 6oz, an Exmouth SAC record.

Jo Westlake, a member of Beer and District SAA, whose club record fish was caught from the relatively clean bottomed Charmouth Beach. This fished weighed in at 8lbs 14oz and is our latest fish of the month.

It is not the biggest fish caught but the circumstances of capture and the fact it was caught on the south coast were the main considerations when choosing this fish. A prize pack from our kind sponsor Sidewinder lures will soon be on its way.

Mike Spiller of Honiton SAC boat fished from Ilfracombe and had a great day on the Spurdogs, as did Saleem Ali whose best fish tipped the scales at 18lbs 10oz. Conger eels also featured this week with Mark Warwick landing one of 22lbs and Jack Davies landing one of 16lbs 11oz.

Michael Potter fished the SW league and landed a Ballan Wrasse of 5lbs7oz. George Drew from East Devon fished a local beach using a whole squid for bait and caught and returned an early season Bass of 5lbs 10oz.

As reported last week, Newbarn Angling centre, our other kind Fish of the month sponsor is fishing well. This week saw Wayne Hockley fish a day session using monster fruit fusion washed out yellow pop-ups on a Ronnie rig over a bed of crushed boillies and maggots with his reward being two carp, a common and a mirror both weighing in at around 16lbs.

I am still hearing of Mackerel being caught around Torquay and Brixham, although the recent storms may have sent dome out to deeper water. A few Plaice have been caught and the next few weeks should see them coming close to the shore after spawning.
