'Piano boy' Calvin Cheung has been hitting the right note to help the homeless in Mid Devon.

Calvin  10, set out raise £50 for charity playing at the Tiverton Pannier Market.  But now he has topped the £500 mark.

The money is going to the Churches Housing Action Team, a  charity based in Tiverton that works to prevent homelessness in Mid Devon.

CHAT helps to provide sleeping bags and tents as a temporary measure as well as managing an emergency food store. They also help people set up homes by providing furniture, crockery, bedding and other necessities.

Calvin became aware of CHAT after they visited his St John’s Catholic Primary School. He has been playing the market for a year after starting to learn how to play the in May 2019.

He wanted to experience playing music on an acoustic piano as he had been learning on a digital piano.

Market manager Jim Bray noticed his performances and filmed a couple of songs for their Facebook social media page. These were well received and it led to Jim offering Calvin a half hour slot at the Christmas Market.

The CHAT school visit left a big impression on him and he came up with the idea of using his upcoming performance to raise money for the homeless. Calvin said: "I feel that what the CHAT people are doing seems really important and I wanted to help.

"I hope it will bring lots of happy faces to many people, especially during this pandemic time, with some good joyful music and while doing so I hope to collect any donations that are given."

Calvin has thoroughly enjoyed he sessions and said: "It showed me how just by doing something I enjoy and putting it into a good cause, I can help others in need”.

Calvin lives in Tiverton with his mum, dad, brother and sister, who are extremely proud of what he has achieved, both for himself and for the benefit of others.

Calvin took his first piano grading in the summer of 2021 and successfully attained grade five. He is now working on his grade six exam which he will be taking shortly.

He has many other interests which include martial arts, performing arts, science and pokémon!.
