A Paignton man is in line for a top award – for Sermon of the Year.

Organisers Preach magazine as announced the names of the three finalists for its nationwide Christian event.

Included is Ian Lister, 40 from Paignton the town where he grew up, although he was actually born in Blackpool.

He studied at the University of Sussex and soon after graduating moved to Surrey where he worked as a software engineer for about 10 years before returning to his roots in Devon.

He now works for a social care organisation and enjoys the technical and creative side of producing videos and animations.

Ian has been a local preacher in the Methodist Church for around six years.  The finalists were selected from a host of entries from across the country and from all Christian denominations.

For this year’s theme, ‘Welcome the Stranger’, preachers and would-be preachers were asked to submit a sermon of 1,200 words.

The finalists will be tasked now to prepare to deliver their sermons at a Grand Final on Thursday June 23.

The event, which takes place at Life Church in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, will be broadcast via YouTube.

Sermons will be delivered live to the panel of judges who will give their feedback on the spot, and decide the winner.
