A Paignton university student has been awarded a £1,000 scholarship for outstanding academic achievement - earned while starting her own business in the middle of a global pandemic and coping with her two young children's lockdown learning.

Robyn Dale, 32, said: “I’m delighted to have earned an academic scholarship, especially under the tough circumstances we all find ourselves in. Receiving this scholarship is a very kind acknowledgement of my hard work.”

Robyn is in the third year of an integrative counselling degree.

For the mother-of-two, the pandemic has proved a particularly busy time.

She volunteered as a counsellor for a charity at the start of the pandemic and, since then, has set up a counselling business that continues to grow.

“I started my own business during in the pandemic, so finding the time to put into my studies has been challenging, but worth it,” said Robyn, a former pupil at Torquay Girls' Grammar School.

“My children are in early primary school, so home learning for all of us has been a challenge, but my tutors couldn’t have been more supportive, flexible and understanding. It has been a shame not seeing classmates face-to-face, however the sense of community has been really strong, and I feel well connected with online learning and communication.”

University of Worcester deputy vice chancellor and provost, Professor Sarah Greer, said: “We are very proud of each and every student who earned an academic scholarship or prize this year, particularly given the unprecedented circumstances of the last year.

"Despite the challenges they have been faced with during the pandemic, these students have proved their commitment to their studies, and we hope this award will inspire them to further academic success.

“These scholarships and prizes will demonstrate to potential employers the outstanding achievements of our students, as well as providing welcome practical financial support and encouragement for the recipients.

"The scholarships and prizes are supported by generous philanthropists, including the university’s distinguished Honorary Fellows, local employers, and many successful graduates of the university. We are so grateful to all our benefactors, whose generosity makes such a difference to the lives of our students.”
