Leading rural insurer NFU Mutual is supporting Devon’s aspiring performers as part of an ongoing campaign aiming to empower young farmers.

The ‘We Grow Futures’ initiative is being backed by NFU Mutual as part of its three-year sponsorship of the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs). It celebrates the vital role young people play in the South West’s rural economy, while also encouraging more youngsters to be a part of the YFC’s work.

Now, a new social media film has been released to highlight the benefits and experience the club’s various competitions can offer. ‘We Grow Performers’ features past and present members talking about the skills they’ve gained by competing in the club’s entertainment competitions and speaking events.

The short film was launched in the lead up to Devon YFC’s County Finals of Pantomime, Show Choir and Cheerleading which were held on  February 26 and 27 at Exmouth Pavilion.
The hotly contested event featured six clubs battling it out to win the title of Devon champion by performing their own pantomime. Totnes YFC were one of the finalists. Members of different clubs also come together for the choir competitions.

The aim of the competition was to encourage YFC members aged 28 and under to learn new performance techniques and develop musical and acting skills while growing their teamwork, communication, expression and confidence.

Richard Tucker, current Devon NFU chairman,  now writes pantomime scripts and is the producer for Cheriton and Tedburn YFC.

He says: "The performing arts competitions within young farmers are brilliant because they give members the opportunity to express themselves – it’s all about having a laugh and putting a smile on people’s faces.

“The buzz that you get from performing on stage is something you will be talking about for years to come."

Rosie Bennett, Devon YFC County chairman and national YFC vice-chairman, added: “You don’t necessarily associate Devon Young Farmers with performing arts, but if you speak to any members that have competed, they will tell you that these competitions are one of the highlights of the year."
