Osborne confirms commitment with new contract for Johnson

Manager Gary Johnson's new contract at Torquay United has not only buoyed Gulls fans but it confirms the ongoing commitment of owner Clarke Osborne.

Johnson's deal, signed just before the 4-2 play-off semi-final win over Notts County, is believed to cover the option of another two years.

Avon businessman Osborne, who bought United in December 2016 and signed Johnson in September 2018, is thought to have pumped at least £3 million into the club.

He told the Torbay Weekly this week: "One more step to make on the journey, and I so much hope it is on Sunday."

Johnson, 65, added: "The club asked me, and I thought it was a good idea to do it now.

"The owners have looked after us through the Covid crisis, and I know what they're trying to do here.

"If I had any inkling that they weren't committed for the future, I wouldn't have signed it, of course."
